Car Vs. Bike Challenge - This Monday!
Who will win the challenge - the car or the bike - on Monday, May 10, 2010? To answer the question, North Okanagan organizers of Monday’s event have challenged their local media, who will travel by car, to record which is faster - the car or the bike! Transport Canada stats prove that for trips less than 5km, cycling is a faster method of transportation.
All cyclists in the area are invited to participate in North Okanagan’s first ever Car vs. Bike Challenge. Vernon Councillors Baumbrough and O’Keefe have accepted Coldstream Councillor Maria Besso’s challenge. This serves as the kick-off event for the Thompson/Okanagan Regional Bike to Work Week.
The excitement is building in Vernon with Melissa Spooner, 3-time Ironman Champion partaking in the event along with Dr. Backus, president of Bike to Work-BC visiting from Victoria. Both choose cycling as their preferred mode of transportation. Dr. Backus believes, “that cycling to work is one way of making your wasted commute time become valuable to you personally, and helps the environment! Studies have shown that bike-commuting employees are significantly happier, healthier and more productive”.
The Car vs. Bike Challenge begins at Lakeview Park on 32 Avenue at the north east corner ending at the Pancake Breakfast Celebration Station at the Real Canadian Wholesale Club. Cyclists are invited to have their bike checked by the experts from Skyride Cycle and gain bicycle safety tips and information from NOCS (North Okangan Cycling Society) and the Greater Vernon Cycling Advisory Committee.
It’s all FREE and fun! You have a chance to win a brand new bike at every celebration station. Details of Bike to Work events including team registration are available on-line: www.biketowork.ca/northokanagan or call 250-550-3634.
Communities of the North Okanagan join 16 others from across British Columbia in taking part in Bike to Work Week 2010. Bike to Work BC is a not for profit society that coordinates the annual Bike to Work Week events throughout the province. Last year 22,000 cyclists participated province-wide, with numbers expected to exceed that this year.
