Victoria - Cycling Infrastructure Improvements
City of Victoria Media Release
Traffic Upgrades to Increase Public Safety and Improve Cycling Route
Date: Friday, April 17, 2009 For Immediate Release
VICTORIA, BC – Traffic upgrades on Bay and Cook Streets will increase public safety and improve a cycling
route in Victoria.
Work is almost complete on Bay Street, between Vancouver and Empire Streets, to reconfigure four lanes into three by installing new designated left turn and bicycle lanes in both directions. New traffic lane markings will be painted today, weather permitting. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution while becoming familiar with the intersection improvements and traffic signal changes.
Emergency Services andBC Transit have been advised of the work and signs are posted. Recently, the intersection of Bay and Cook Streets had its sidewalks widened and new, energy-efficient LED traffic lights with advance left turn signals and countdown timers were installed. Audible pedestrian signals for the hearing impaired will complete the project at the end of the month.
In addition, a new sidewalk was constructed on the west side of Cook Street, between Haultain and Bay Streets, to increase pedestrian access and safety.
The improvements are the result of a traffic safety study developed by the City of Victoria in partnership with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) last May, and support recommendations in the City’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plans.
The work is funded by the City of Victoria, with financial assistance from the ICBC Road Improvement Program.
