Bike to Work Skills Courses

Bike to Work Skills Course for Communities

Fear of traffic and insufficient cycling skills tend to be an important barrier for people beginning commuter cycling.  The Bike to Work Skills Course provides comprehensive training in navigating a cycle safely in traffic.  The course consists of part in-class, parking lot exercises and on-road riding with Can-Bike II qualified instructors and is offered free of charge to participants.  Safety training is an essential aspect of ensuring a successful Bike to Work Week program.

Free, full-day Bike to Work Skills Courses are presently available in Greater Victoria.

Metro Vancouver offers 4.5 hour courses that have a fee for service.  Check out the MetroVancouver website for more info.

Establishing Bike to Work Skills Courses in your Community

For communities that do not presently have a training course for safe cycling in traffic, two potential options are available:

Option 1:

Bike to Work Victoria instructors can travel to your community to teach courses.  Costs will vary depending on travel distance, length of stay & accommodation.  A full course (maximum 12 participants)

Costs:

  • Per day of instruction $1,000
  • Accommodation & Meals
  • Travel
  • Time in transit
  • Time to develop a route for the safety course (one-time cost) ~ $275

Option 2:

Training skills course instructors in your community and licensing the Bike to Work Skills Course.

The pre-requisite to becoming a Bike to Work Skills Course instructor is:

  • Can-Bike II
  • Bike to Work Train the Trainers Course
  • Instruction of a minimum of two complete BTW Skills Courses under guidance of a lead instructor

Licensing costs $5,000 for a two-year license.  Communities unable to pay this fee should contact Bike to Work Victoria to discuss possible options.

Costs:

  • Travel & accommodation
  • Train the Trainers Workshop

What does the Bike to Work Skills Course license include?

  • Instructor manual
  • Course instruction materials (& updates) as both overheads & powerpoint
  • Web based registration form to manage participants
  • Surveying resources for post-course assessment

Communities may combine resources to develop skills course instructors and license the BTWSC program for a larger regional area.

Are there additional costs for the Bike to Work Skills Course?

Yes. The organizing community or body interested in licensing the Bike to Work Skills Course must also pay for Instructor training in the one-day course material.

What prerequisites do instructor’s need to teach the course?

Bike to Work Victoria recommends all instructors to have satisfactorily completed the in-depth Can-Bike II training.
