I am a Commuter Cyclist
Name: Dean Clark
Age: 28
Profession: Physiotherapist
Years in Campbell River: One
Home base: Powell River
Interesting facts: I have lived and worked in South Africa, Australia and Victoria before settling in Campbell River. I have a degree in economics.
Do you bike to work every day: Yes. We are a one car family and my wife needs the car
Why do you bike to work: Saves a lot of money; you feel great when you arrive at work; you get in your daily exercise without having to do anything special.
Time required to cycle to work? It’s as fast as driving a car. Same thing in Victoria.
Are commuter bikes expensive? Compared to the cost of insurance, gas and maintenance of a vehicle, bikes are really cheap.
Clothing issues: Roll clothes to avoid wrinkles and transport in a waterproof container. You just have to be more organized.
Showering required: No. Dress for the weather in layers and you don’t really sweat.
Weather and cycling: You need good rain gear and the best investment for $30 – 40 is a pair of shoe covers. If you have dry feet, the rest of you feels warm.
Any advice for new commuter cyclists: If you are serious, get the right equipment – a decent bike, well fitting helmet, a good winter jacket and shoe covers. You wouldn’t try to play tennis with a badminton racquet, so why would you try to bike to work without the proper equipment? Initially you may spend a few dollars but it will save you a lot of money in the long run.
